The Blue Morpho Butterfly lives in rainforests of South and Central America. It is has brilliant blue wings. It is a neo-tropical butterfly with has a wingspan of about 6 inches (15 cm). The vivid color of the blue morpho’s wings is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings, which reflect light, causing the butterfly to appear a brilliant iridescent blue.

Artist’s notes:
This drawing of a Blue Morpho was created in 2007. It was a challenge to capture the iridescence of the wings without making it look artificial. The color of these butterflies really is striking. I saw a few in the rainforests of Costa Rica. When they are resting they fold up their wings and are hard to see in the forest undergrowth. But when they’re disturbed they ‘pop’ up with a brilliant flash of metallic blue.
