The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is one of the eight species of bear. It has the smallest distribution area of all living bears  – just a a few patches in western central China’s Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. Once on the edge of extinction, aggressive conservation programs have helped stabilize the bear’s populations.
