Moose – called Elk in Europe – (Alces alces) typically inhabit mixed deciduous forest of the Northern Hemisphere, ranging in areas of temperate to subarctic climates. In North American moose are found in many parts of Canada as well as Alaska, part of New England and the upper Rocky Mountains. In Europe they are found in Scandinavia and in areas of the Baltic states.

Moose are very large mammals, standing 6-7 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing over 1000 pounds. Moose the the second largest land animal in North America (behind the Bison) and the largest in Europe. The Moose is the official state animal of Alaska and Maine.
