Description

Primates of Africa Poster

Woodpeckers are specialized birds known for their tree-climbing and insect-finding abilities. They have chisel-like bills, zygodactyl feet – which means two toes forward, two back – that gives them a powerful grip to hang on to whatever perch they’re on. Their stiff tail feathers also offer support. This, combined with powerful neck muscles to withstand hammering and a specialized nostrils to keep wood chips out, gives them the ability to masterfully excavate trees to find insects and build nests. Eating these insects helps keep the tree healthy and free of pests. Woodpeckers communicate via drumming to attract mates and mark territory.
