Alpine newts are native to much of the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe (they have been introduced into other areas such as the UK.) The scientific or binominal name is Ichthyosaura alpestris, which has been changed from the previous name of Triturus alpestris and Mesotriton alpestris. The females are larger, growing to be about 4.7 inches (12cm) and the males are about 3.5 inches (9 cm.) Alpine newts typically inhabit forests with good access to water in hilly to mountainous regions. They are mostly absent in forest-poor areas.
