Anna’s hummingbird (Calypte anna) is a medium-sized hummingbird species found year-round along the Pacific Coast and in areas of the Southwest. The males have vibrant, iridescent red-pink crowns and throats, while females have a more muted green and gray appearance with some red spotting on the throat. They are highly adaptable birds and can be found in a variety of habitats from forests to suburban gardens, where they feed on nectar and insects. Males perform dramatic courtship dives, and females build the nest and care for the young.
