Information about the European Otter:

The European Otter – also called the Eurasian Otter, Common Otter or Eurasian River Otter – is an Old World otter native throughout much of Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. Like other otter species, they are rarely far from water. They are most commonly found in the UK, where nearly 12% of the adult breeding population is found. While generally associated with freshwater, they can live near saltwater, provided enough food is in the area to sustain them. While once very common in their native range, over the second half of the 20th century their numbers fell considerable, due to pollution, habitat loss and the introduction of non-native species. They are now considered near threatened or threatened.

Artist’s notes:

The European Otter was completed on 10.27.2014. There is something so compelling about the face of an otter. I’m not sure what it is, but their antics, along with one of the most adorable faces in the animal kingdom make them a true joy to watch and a pleasure to draw. This otter will be part of a collage of “The Otters of the World.” The drawing is based on a photo by and was used with permission.
