Information about the Common Black Hawk:

The Common Black Hawk is member of the family Accipitridae, which are one of the two major families of diurnal birds of prey. It is native to the southwestern US, down through Central America and into South America. It is a medium-sized raptor about 16-20 inches long (43–53 cm) It has a wingspan of roughly four feet. This hawk is a riparian nester and are dependent on mature, relatively undisturbed habitat supported by a streams that flow year round. They feed mostly on crustaceans such as crabs, as well as small vertebrates and eggs of other birds. They are not considered endangered.

Artist’s notes:

The Common Black Hawk was completed on 11.22.2010. I noticed it had been about a year since I had drawn my last hawk. This hawk makes the seventh different species of hawk I’ve drawn. Ideally, I’d like to complete all species native to North America and will probably draw a few more hawks in the next few months. The drawing is based on a photo by the talented wildlife photographer David Cree.
