Information about the European Starling:
The European Starling – also called the Common Starling or simply Starling – is a member of the order of Passeriformes or songbirds or, more accurately perching birds. There are many subspecies of the Starling, scattered across much of the Northern Hemisphere. They are a highly adaptable species and have been introduced – usually unintentionally – in many areas they are not native to. This has resulted in the steep decline of native species who cannot compete with the aggressive bird that reproduces at such a high rate. These birds can live in many different environments, and are omnivorous and feed on various types of invertebrates such as caterpillars, moths, cicadas and spiders. They will also feed plant matter like seeds, fruits, grains and nectars.

Artist’s notes:
The European Starling illustration was completed on 12.10.2011. I know a lot of people dislike these birds, especially in the US where they are an invasive species that have displaced many of the native North American birds. Moreover, they appears to most people as drab and colorless bird. But when closely examined, the lovely coloration of these birds comes into clear focus, which I hope I captured in the illustration. The drawing is based on a photo by Warren Lynn.
