Information about the Ferruginous Hawk:

The Ferruginous Hawk (or “Ferry Hawk” for short) is the largest of the buteos with a broad and long wingspan of up to 60 inches. Because of it’s large size is sometimes mistaken for an eagle. They are found in the arid and semi-arid grassland areas of central and western North America from northern Mexico to the plains of central Canada. Like other birds of prey these raptors feed on small mammals, reptiles, smaller birds and even insects. The Latin name means “royal” or “kingly” and their common name “ferruginous” means rusty color.

The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Description

Fine art illustration of a Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis.) The illustration is available in black and white or color.

Artist’s notes:

The Ferruginous Hawk was completed on 10.28.09. While much of the bird in the pose is white, the drawing was actually quite difficult, taking me longer than I had anticipated. The markings on the wings and legs were tricky, as well as making sure the wings appeared to bend naturally inwards rather than out.
