The Ferruginous Hawk (or “Ferry Hawk” for short) is the largest of the buteos with a broad and long wingspan of up to 60 inches. Because of it’s large size is sometimes mistaken for an eagle. They are found in the arid and semi-arid grassland areas of central and western North America from northern Mexico to the plains of central Canada. Like other birds of prey these raptors feed on small mammals, reptiles, smaller birds and even insects. The Latin name means “royal” or “kingly” and their common name “ferruginous” means rusty color.
