Information about the Muskrat:
The Muskrat is the only species in the genus Ondatra. It is a medium-sized semi-aquatic rodent native to the the swamps, bogs and other wetland areas. Like the American Beaver, it too has an effect on the ecology of the areas in which it lives. Despite the name, it is not a “true rat” but rather a relative. It is more closely related to lemmings and voles. Adult Muskrat grow to be about 16–28 inches long (40–70 cm) – almost half of that tail and weighing roughly 1.3–4.4 pounds (0.6–2 kg.) These small mammals are often found in the habitat as beavers, and they also have many of the same behaviors, such as felling trees by chewing through them and building dens. The Muskrat is an especially adaptable animal, and will often exploit areas altered by humans (canals, drainage ditches) to make homes. While they are only native to parts of North America, they have been introduced into much of the entire continent and Europe and have established themselves in these areas.

Artist’s notes:
The Muskrat was completed on 11.28.2012. A city worker in the town of Fairview, Oregon had asked me to create a series of two signs that would display some of the more common animals found in the area around the city. He originally selected about 30 animals, and asked me to create drawing for two more he had in mind. Before setting about drawing them, he decided that the Muskrat would be more relative to the signs then the animal he had chosen – the American Beaver.

Information about the Margay:
The Margay is a smaller member of the feline family. It is native to southern North America, down through much of Central America and most of South America. Like many other species of cat, the Margay is a solitary hunter. It prefers remote sections of very dense tropical and subtropical rainforests and cloudforests. It looks similar to the Ocelot, but the head is a little smaller with longer legs and tail. The cat weighs from 5.7 to 8.8 pounds (2.6 to 4 kilograms), with a body length of 19 to 31 inches (48 to 79 centimeters), and a tail length of 13 to 20 in (33 to 51 centimeters.) Because of unregulated hunting and habitat loss this cat is considered endangered by some environmental groups.
