Information about the Northern Cricket Frog:

The Northern Cricket Frog is a small amphibian native to damp, moist areas of swamps and forests, usually not far from a body of water. This tiny amphibians ranges throughout most of the the central plains states, from western Texas, north to South Dakota and from the Florida panhandle north to southeastern New York. They are among the smallest of North America’s vertebrates, usually only growing to a maximum length of 1.5 inches or 38 millimeters. Their coloration varies, but they are usually a mottled brown and gray, with a strip of bright green along the top from head to back legs. While they are members of the Hylidae (treefrogs) family, they are not arboreal. There are three recognized subspecies of this frog.

Artist’s notes:

The Northern Cricket Frog Northern Cricket Frog was completed on 4.10.2012. Recently, I decided to illustrate all of the native frog species of my home state of Minnesota. When I looked at the list, I noticed there were only 3 species I hadn’t already completed. One of them was the Northern Cricket Frog (which I had never seen in the wild, probably because it’s native to only a small part of the southeastern part of Minnesota.
