The Red-Legged Partridge – also called the French Partridge to distinguish it from the English Partridge – is a game bird native to Europe, mostly England, France, Spain and Italy. It is usually found on the ground, although it can fly for short bursts at a time. While the species has a large range and is not considered endangered, it does appear to be in decline due to habitat loss, overhunting and hybridization with other similar species.

Artist’s notes:

The Red-Legged Partridge was completed on 5.21.2014. Often, when I’m scanning the photos of my contacts on Flickr, I will come across an image that simply demands to be illustrated. I wasn’t familiar with this specific species of partridge, but the patterns of the feathers are so remarkable I knew I had to add it to the image library. The drawing is based on a photo by Gordon Linton and was used with permission.
