Information about the African Fish Eagle:
The African Fish Eagle – also called the African Sea Eagle – is a large species of eagle that found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, usually near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply. As a result of its large range, it is known in many languages. This bird of prey has a wingspan of nearly 8 feet (2.4 meters.) As the name makes clear, it feeds primarily on fish which it will catch by swooping down on the water’s surface a grabbing the fish with it’s formidable talons. It will also prey on other birds, turtles, lizards and even newly born crocodiles. It is the national bird of Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Sudan. There is an estimated wild population of about 300,000 birds.

Artist’s notes:
The African Fish Eagle was completed on 3.21.2014. Some months ago I decided to put together a collage of the world’s species of eagles. The African Fish or Sea Eagle is such a dramatic and handsome bird of prey I knew I had to include it in the collage. I love to draw birds of prey with their wing spread open and soaring. The drawing is based on a photo by Peter Steward and was used with his permission.
