Information about the Pygmy Falcon

The Pygmy Falcon – also called the African Pygmy Falcon – is a small bird of pray native to the the dry brush areas of eastern and southern Africa. It is the smallest species of raptor native to that continent. As the name implies, this bird is very small – only 7.5 inches long (19 cm). It feeds on insects, small mammals and birds. In the wild, Pygmy Falcons will nest in homes made by weaver birds. Pygmy falcons occasionally engage in polyandrous relationships, where there are more than two adults living together and tending to the offspring.

Artist’s notes:

The African Pygmy Falcon was completed on 1.24.2015. I thought I had completed a series of falcons to create a collage of them. But then I realized I hadn’t added a species native to only Africa. I did a little poking around and came across the beautiful Pygmy Falcon. This, along with some other recent drawings, will go into a collage of falcons and put on my CafePress.com store.
