Oceanic Whitetip Shark – Signed Fine Art Print

Price range: $19.95 through $27.95

Information about the Oceanic Whitetip Shark:

The Oceanic Whitetip Shark is a large pelagic shark inhabiting tropical and warm temperate seas. Its stocky body is most notable for its long, white-tipped, rounded fins. This aggressive but slow-moving fish dominates feeding frenzies, and is a danger to shipwreck or air crash survivors. Recent studies show steeply declining populations because its large fins are highly valued as the chief ingredient of shark fin soup and, as with other shark species, the whitetip faces mounting fishing pressure throughout its range. These sharks are found globally in deep, open water, with a temperature greater than 64 °F (18 °C). The Oceanic Whitetip feeds mainly on pelagic cephalopods and bony fish. However, its diet can be far more varied and less selective—it is known to eat threadfins, stingrays, sea turtles, birds, gastropods, crustaceans, and mammalian carrion. Famed oceanographic researcher Jacques Cousteau described the oceanic whitetip as “the most dangerous of all sharks”.

The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Artist’s notes:

The Oceanic Whitetip Shark drawing was completed on 11.4.2013. Sometimes I am so hasty to get started on a drawing, I get the species completely wrong. It usually isn’t a big deal as it’s somewhat random how I select my subjects anyway. With the Oceanic Whitetip, I actually intended to draw the Whitetip Reef shark, in order to add it to a collage of the animals of the Great Barrier Reef. Anyway, it made for a funny Facebook status update, and now I have yet another shark species illustrated. The drawing is based on a photo by Terry Goss and was used with his permission.
