Flatback Sea Turtle – Signed Fine Art Print

Price range: $19.95 through $27.95

Information about the Flatback Sea Turtle:

The Flatback Sea Turtle is native to the warm tropical waters of the continental shelf of Australia. They are a member of the sea turtle family of Cheloniidae, and the only member of the genus Natator. These medium-sized aquatic reptiles are generally found in the bays, shallow, grassy waters, coral reefs, estuaries, and lagoons on the northern coast of Australia and off the entire coast of Papua New Guinea. They generally stay in shallow waters no more than 200 feet deep. They usually grow to about 3 feet in length, with a carapace of 35 inches. They can weigh between 150-300 pounds. At one time the Flatback was thought to be related to the Kemp’s or Ridley’s Sea Turtles, but in the 1980s it was determined to be a separate genus and species.

The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Description

Fine art illustration of a Flatback Sea Turtle (Natator depressus.) The illustration is available in black and white or color.

Artist’s notes:

The Flatback Sea Turtle was completed on 9.8.09. I had searched for a long time for some good reference photos of these impressive reptiles. Most images are of the turtles on the beach laying eggs. And of course most of the animal is hidden by sand. But recently I found some good images and was able to work up this illustration. The drawing is based on a photo by Jason Isley and was completed on 1.25.2013. It is the seventh and last extant sea turtle that I can draw. It’s always an odd feeling when I “complete” a species – I’m happy to have finished all the drawing I can of that species, but also sad that most likely I’ll never draw another. Although I do have some plans to draw the Archelon, which is a species of giant sea turtle that went extinct millions of years ago
