Information about the Gopher Rockfish:
The Gopher Rockfish are native to much of the Eastern Pacific Ocean coastal range. They grow to be about 16 inches (40 cm) long . They are found from Cape Blanco in Oregon in the north, down to Punta San Roque in southern Baja California in the south. They’ve native to the in the intertidal zone, but most occur at depths of 40-250 feet (12–80 meters) living in crevices and holes during the day, and ranging further abroad at night to feed on benthic crustacea, cephalopods, and some types of fishes.

Artist’s notes:
The Gopher Rockfish was completed in February of 2016. I love these fish. They are so untypical of what I think of when I think of fish; quick, constantly moving and alert. Rockfish are kind of the opposite. They seem pretty lethargic, resting on rocks and not especially alert. The drawing is based on a photo by Ron DeCloux and was used with permission.
