The Gopher Tortoise is a terrestrial reptile native to the coastal plains of the United States. They are medium-sized, with an average adult length of 10 inches and weight of 9 pounds. These tortoises dig burrows several feet deep into the ground. These burrows are very important, as the Gopher Tortoise is considered a “keystone” species they are used by 360 other animals for shelter. Many of these species would not survive without them. Gopher tortoises are herbivores, feeding on perhaps 300 different types of vegetation, including grasses, mushrooms, blackberries, flowers and will even scavenge carrion such as road kill. They generally get all the water they need from the food they eat, and will only drink water in times of extreme drought. The Gopher Tortoise lays large clutches of eggs, but very often they are predated on by armadillos, raccoons, foxes, skunks and alligators. Only about six percent of all eggs laid make it to be adults. The Gopher Tortoise is the state reptile of Georgia.
