The Karner Blue Butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) is a small, endangered butterfly dependent on wild lupine for its caterpillars. The insects requires specific oak savanna/pine barren habitats. The males are silvery-blue, females brown with orange crescents. The butterfly has a short adult life involving two broods annually. The Karner Blue feeds on nectar from various flowers. Because of it’s special needs, the butterfly is considered endangered as it faces threats from habitat loss due to fire suppression, urbanization, and agriculture.
