The Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the world’s largest land carnivore. They have adapted to Arctic life with black skin and clear, hollow fur that appears white for camouflage. They are swimmers, using their large, partially webbed paws to paddle through the water. The bears have a strong sense of smell to hunt seals on sea ice. While all other bears have light or pink skin underneath their fur, polar bears actually have black skin. The future of the Polar Bear is uncertain, as they face threats from climate change impacting their hunting grounds.
