Information about the River Frog:
The River Frog is a freshwater frog native to the swamps near streams and rivers. It can be found from the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States, from southern North Carolina to northern Florida, west to southeastern Mississippi. Although due to amphibian decline worldwide, it likely has been extirpated from some of these areas. Like other frogs it is an opportunistic feeder, waiting patiently until a small animal – usually an insect, small invertebrate or similar comes near. It will use it’s tongue to grab the pray and pull into into it’s large mouth.

Artist’s notes:
The River Frog was completed on 5.14.2014. Slowly but surely I’m working my way through the species of frog native to North America. While I will likely never finish this goal – especially including all the sub-species of the many dozens of frogs – it is nice to learn about new frogs I’ve never encountered before. The River Frog drawing is based on a photo by Mike Martin and was used with his permission.
