Songbirds of Central Park, New York Poster
Central Park is 843 acres (3.4 sq km) making it the largest urban park in New York City and one of the largest in the world. It was the first public landscaped park in the United States and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. It officially opened in 1876. The park features artificial lakes, waterfalls, meadows, wooded areas, and the Central Park Zoo. Since 1908 the park has been featured in over 240 films. The park is very important to birds who stop over during their migrations.
Central Park in New York has a rich diversity of native songbirds. Many of the birds only pass through the state during migration, but other species are found there all year round. Unlike other birds, songbirds have a highly developed syrinx with complex sets of internal muscles. These muscles allow them to control different parts of the syrinx independently, enabling the production of two sounds at once or rapidly changing notes to create complex, musical melodies. For more information on New York songbirds visit: National Audubon Society, New York State DNR, and iNaturalist as they offer guides, species lists, and identification tips.
The Songbirds of Central Park, New York poster features scientifically accurate illustrations of over twenty species of the state’s native and migrant songbirds. The artistic design is complete with both common and scientific names. The poster is shipped in a sturdy 2″ mailing tube with plastic endcaps. The posters can be signed or customized by the artist upon request.
