The Southern Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) is a small, dense-furred marine mammals found along the coastline of California from approximately Half Moon Bay to Santa Barbara, and San Nicolas Island. These members of the family Mustelidae are known for using tools to eat hard-shelled prey such as crabs, clams, mussels, sea urchins, and snails. The sea otter lives in around kelp forests, and playing a vital role in their ecosystem by maintaining kelp beds. While populations have increased from historic lows, they remain threatened by pollution – mostly from oil spills – as well as threats from boat strikes, food scarcity, fishing gear entanglement and shark predation.
