Information about the Spotted Towhee:
The Spotted Towhee is a member of the family Emberizidae, which are the New World Sparrows. They are found in a variety of habitats throughout much of the western parts of North America, such as scrubby forests and forests edges, meadows and open fields. These active birds feed on both insects and plant matter, such as berries, acorns and seeds, which they forage for on the forest floor by backwards hoping and scratching up the dirt and leaves.

Artist’s notes:
The Spotted Towhee illustration was completed on 9.13.2011. This songbird is yet another of the common California birds that I am slowly, one-by-one, adding to the image library. I love these charming birds, and seeing them in the trees as I walk my dogs in the hills behind Berkeley makes me happy. The drawing is based on a photo by Nancy Wagner.
