The Yosemite Toad (Anaxyrus canorus) is considered a ‘true toad.’ It was once very common in the high elevations of the Sierra Nevada mountains. These toads are perhaps the most colorful of the toads found in North America. They are found in damp meadows and pine forests except when they are breeding in the months of May to July. Because of short summers in their native habitat they are only active for 4-5 months a year. Due to habit loss, pesticides and the chytrid fungus they are now endangered.
