Information about the Northern Muriqui:
The Northern Muriqui – also called the Woolly Spider Monkey is an endangered muriqui species endemic to Brazil. It is unusual among primates in that it shows egalitarian social relationships. It is found in the Atlantic Forest region of the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia. Muriquis are the largest species of New World monkeys. The northern muriqui can grow up to 4.3 ft tall. It feeds mainly on leaves and twigs, but will also eat fruit. It often hangs upside-down by its prehensile tail while eating.

Artist’s notes:
The Northern Muriqui was completed in March of 2016. I had been contacted by an organization https://www.facebook.com/muriquicaparao/ that’s working to help conserve the Northern Muriqui. They asked if I could create a drawing for them to be used for their literature. I was unfamiliar with the species, but I thought there was no reason I shouldn’t draw this species.
