Animals of Australia Poster
Australia’s many different types of natural environments – rivers, waterways, wetlands, deserts, plains, forests, bush and coastal areas – are home to reptiles, birds, mammals, insects and amphibians. It is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, home to between 600,000 and 700,000 species.
Its long geographic isolation has resulted in a high level of endemism, meaning many of its animals—including 87% of mammals, 93% of reptiles, and 94% of amphibians—are found nowhere else in the world. Many of these animals are characterized by specialized adaptations shaped by millions of years of isolation.
