Information about the Anise Swallowtail Butterfly:
The Anise Swallowtail Butterfly is a member of the family Papilionidae and native to much of the western parts of North America. It is very similar to the Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus) but it is a little shorter and lacks some of the black markings on the tail. It gets it’s name from the Fennel plant (also called Wild Anise) the caterpillar stage of the insect feeds on. This butterfly is found most commonly in areas that have been disturbed or otherwise altered by humans, such as the edges alongside road, foothills that have been logged, open gardens and parks.

Artist’s notes:
The Anise Swallowtail Butterfly was completed on 4.25.2012. Some friends of ours had a Halloween party last fall. We have never been to their place before, and I immediately noticed a large open cage with Fennel plants sticking out. There were caterpillars on them. My friends told me that the caterpillars would stay on the plants, and eventually cocoon and the butterflies would emerge (Which they would then release.) Since then, I’ve been meaning to draw this species of butterfly. The drawing is based on a photo by Ron Wolf.
