Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are adaptable, solitary wild cats known for their short “bobbed” tails, mottled reddish-brown fur, and tufted ears. These cats are found all across North America in diverse habitats from forests to deserts and even suburbs. As skilled predators, they primarily hunt rabbits, rodents, and birds, though they’ll take larger prey like deer, and are generally elusive, most active at dawn, dusk, and night. These territorial felines use scent marking and vocalizations (hisses, yowls) to communicate, living solitary lives but interacting for mating, with populations stable across their wide range.
