The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is the smallest pelican species, known for its dramatic plunge-diving to catch fish, using its large throat pouch as a net to scoop up prey from the water before draining it and swallowing the fish. They have distinctive gray-brown bodies, white heads (with breeding season color changes), and long bills with expandable pouches, living along North and South American coasts. These birds were dramatically impacted by the use of DDT, but since the chemical was banned, they have made a remarkable recovery.
