Burrowing owls are small, long-legged birds of prey. They generally are found in open grasslands, prairies, and deserts, nesting underground in burrows dug by other animals like prairie dogs or squirrels. They are unique for being active day or night, hunting insects, rodents, and reptiles, and will occasionally feed on fallen fruit. They are not currently considered endangered in the US, but their populations are declining, and they are listed as endangered in Canada and threatened in Mexico. The Burrowing Owl face major threats from habitat loss, pesticides, and vehicles.
