The California Red-Legged Frog (Rana draytonii) is the largest native frog in the western US., The frog is known for its reddish belly and legs, prominent dark leg stripes, and long jumping legs. Due to several threats – habitat loss, bullfrog predation, and pesticides – this species is considered vulnerable. The California Red-Legged Frog is primarily found in coastal California, along streams and in vernal pools. Adults eat insects, small mammals, and other frogs, while the tadpoles feed on algae.
