Information about the Copperband Butterfly Fish:
The Copperband Butterfly Fish – also called the Beak Coralfish – is a medium-sized fish (generally growing to about 8 inches (20 cm) long) found in and around rocky shorelines, coral reefs and estuaries of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is one of three members of the genus Chelmon. This genus is noted for their distinctive long beaks. They’re usually found at depth of around 3- 80 feet (1-25 meters) This species is particularly territorial and will defend it’s territory against almost any animal that comes into it. Because of their great beauty and coloration they are also very popular aquarium fish, although they can be difficult to keep and are only recommended for advanced aquarists.

Artist’s notes:
The Copperband Butterfly Fish was completed on 11.12.2011. After my first SCUBA trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, I vowed to draw more of the colorful reef fish I saw there, as well as other species I hadn’t yet encountered. If I recall corrected the Copperband Butterfly Fish was one of the species I encountered there. There was a challenge to this drawing, in that although at first blush it is mostly a white fish, that white is actually various patterns of iridescent colors; purple, blue, green, yellow and orange. I believe I was able to capture this lovely convergence of coloration.
