Information about the Blue Sea Star:

The Blue Sea star is a member of the family Ophiothricidae. It is found in the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. While they are called Blue Sea Stars, there is a good deal of color variation, and they can be aqua, purple or even orange. They grow to be about 12 inches in diameter (30 cm). They are usually found on the sea floor, not too far from the shoreline. The Blue Sea Star is predated on by various animals, such as pufferfish, shrimp, and sea anemones. This sea star does very well in captivity and due to it’s beautiful coloration it is often kept in captivity by aquarists. Due to this, along with the use of the sea star for souvenirs to sell to tourists, their numbers have declined in the wild.

Fine art illustration of a Blue Sea Star (Linckia laevigata.) The illustration is available in black and white or color.

Artist’s notes:

The Blue Sea Star was completed on 2.7.2014. This starfish marks the last – for now – drawing for a collage of these animals. I’ve done a lot of research into these amazing echinoderms. I tried to select a good mix of colors, shapes and textures to make up the collage. My Flickr friend Mark Harris – who specializes in underwater photography – had a number of images he was kind enough to allow me to use as reference, as well as this one.
