The Red-Knobbed Starfish – also called the red spine star, African sea star, African red knob sea star – is a member of the family Oreasteridae. It is a medium-sized sea star, growing to about a 12 inch diameter. The starfish is native to the warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific, usually not being found in depth below 300 feet (100 meters) Because of it’s striking beauty and adaptability to live in captivity it is a popular addition to a saltwater aquarium. It is, however, incompatible with other invertebrates and will devour soft corals, sponges, tube worms and other starfish.

Artist’s notes:

The Red-Knobbed Starfish was completed on 1.30.2014. A few months back a friend’s child had some pretty serious surgery. I sent him a copy of my Ocean Animal’s Field Guide and some other marine life related items in the hospital. Since then, I’ve decided to send him a follow up gift; a collage of starfish which apparently he is obsessed with. This is the fourth species I’ve drawn, and I’ll probably add another 3-4 before assembling it.
