The Mourning Cloak Butterfly – called the Camberwell Beauty in Britain – is a large butterfly native to the 2.5 to 4 inches (62 – 75 mm). Because of their migration patterns, these insects can be found almost anywhere plants occurs including forests, open fields, city and urban parks and suburbs. They are especially common in riparian areas. They can be found in nearly of North America south of the tundra areas of Canada to central Mexico; although they are rarely in the encountered in Gulf States and peninsular Florida. They are also found in some of the temperate areas of Eurasia. Adult Mourning Cloaks can live 10-11 months and because of that they might be the longest lived butterfly on the planet. It is the state insect of Montana.

Artist’s notes:

The Mourning Cloak Butterfly was completed on 12.4.2012. I’m on the “backside” of the 50 state project (drawing all species designated as “official” state animals) and with the completion of the Mourning Cloak Butterfly I will have finished Montana, and have only twenty more states to complete – about 50 more drawings. The Mourning Cloak drawing relied heavily on some recycled elements, but being able to fill in areas of black with a dot pattern – rather than hand draw thousands of dots to achieve the same effect – really cuts down on time and effort. The drawing is based on a photo by Andrew Don.
