Information about the Smallmouth Bass:
The Smallmouth Bass is a member of the sunfish family. It is one of the black basses. It is a very popular sports fish for anglers. It has many different names, including bronzeback, brown bass, brownie, bronze bass and bareback bass. In general the bass grown to be about 9 to 14 inches in length and about 2 pounds, although they can grow larger. They are usually found in lakes and rivers with clear water, with areas that have tree stumps, large rocks and vegetation. The fish is carnivorous and feeds on crayfish, insects and smaller fish. Males are usually smaller than the females. Because this is such a popular sports fish it has been introduced into many areas they’re not native to in Europe and Asia.

Artist’s notes:
The Smallmouth Bass was completed on 1.20.2012. It’s kind of hard to believe that just a year ago, I had no freshwater sports fish. But as I make my way through the 50 State Project (drawing all official state animals of the USA) I’ve needed to add fish that are more associated with fishing than biological illustration. I studied several different images – including some of mounted fish – to create this image.
