Diana Fritillary Butterflies – Signed Fine Art Print

Price range: $19.95 through $27.95

Information about the Diana Fritillary Butterflies:

The Diana Fritillary Butterfly is a sexually dimorphic (meaning the male’s and female’s appearance is different) flying insect native to the fields, meadows, forests and wooded areas of the southern US.) They are one of the larger butterflies in North America with a wingspan of about 3-3 7/8 inches (76-98 millimeters.) While their range covers a very large area, they are usually only found in small pockets with areas that can sustain their population. They are under great threat by habitat loss, especially by strip mining. The Diana Fritillary is notable as, unlike most other butterfly species, scatter their eggs on the ground around the host plant rather than on the plant. The larva hatch and then burrow into the ground, where they spend the winter and emerge in the spring. The Diana Fritillary is the official butterfly of the US state of Arkansas.

The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Description

Fine art illustration of a pair of male and female Diana Fritillary Butterflies (Speyeria diana.) The illustration is available in black and white or color.

Artist’s notes:

The Diana Fritillary Butterflies was completed on 5.23.2012. This butterfly drawing is part of the project to illustrate all official state animals. When it came time to draw the animals of Arkansas, I first learned about this species. Notably, that the females and males look completely different. Rather than drawing one or the other, I decided to create an image (perhaps somewhat unrealistically) with both variations.
