Information about the Great-Crested Newt:

Great-Crested newt – also called the Northern Crested or Warty Newt – is native to marshy, damp areas near ponds and slow moving streams from Great Britain and Brittany in the west across much of Europe north of the Alps and the Black Sea. There are three recognized sub-species. While they are not considered endangered, their numbers have dropped in recent decades due to pollution and habitat loss. Because of this decline the newt in now protected throughout much of it’s range and it is illegal to capture or harm them or disturb the habitat in which it lives. Adult newts grow to be about 6-6.5 inches long (12-16 cm.)
