Information about the Hyacinth Macaw:
Hyacinth Macaw is a is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. With a length from the top of its head to the tip of its long pointed tail 3.3 feet (100 cm) it is the longest species of parrot. It is also the largest macaw. The birds have very strong beaks for eating the kernels of hard nuts and seeds. Their strong beaks are even able to crack coconuts, the large brazil nut pods, and macadamia nuts. The birds also boast dry, smooth tongues with a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits. Due to habitat loss and illegal collecting for the pet trade, this parrot is increasingly endangered.

Artist’s notes:
The Hyacinth Macaw was completed on 12.17.2015. I recently came up with the idea to draw the animals native to the Pantanal in Brazil. After researching the area, I learned that this lovely parrot was found there. Seeing as I had been meaning to draw one for many years, this became the perfect chance to create the drawing. The illustration is based on a photo by Tony (tickspics) and was used with permission.
