Information about the Japanese Robin:

The Japanese Robin (Erithacus akahige, formerly Luscinia akahige) – also called the Komadri – is a small songbird native to the forests of East Asia, Japan and on Ryukyu Island. Very little is known about this species, but it is believed to be part of the family Muscicapidae, which are of small passerine birds mostly restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). These are mainly small arboreal insectivores, many of which usually take their prey while in flight.

Artist’s notes:

The Japanese Robin was completed on 12.6.2015. When I was putting together a series of animals native to Japan, I realized that I hadn’t included any songbirds. Doing some research, I learned about this wonderful bird. Although I was somewhat upset to learn that this bird is a true Robin, and the American Robin is not! The drawing is based on a photo by Fu-yi Chen and was used with permission.
