The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) is the world’s fastest animal, reaching over 200 mph in its hunting dive due to special nasal structures that protect its lungs; it’s a cosmopolitan raptor eating mostly other birds, nesting on high ledges, and known for its striking blue-grey plumage with a dark head. This bird of prey is found on every continent except Antarctica. One reason the Peregrine Falcon is so widespread is it’s ability to adapt to diverse environments, from high cliffs and coasts to urban skyscrapers. During the mid-part of the 20th century the falcon was nearly driven to extinction from the use of DDT, but once the pesticide was banned, the species rebounded.
