Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) are medium-sized forest raptor known for their distinct calls, reddish shoulders (hence the name.) They can be encountered in deciduous or mixed coniferous-deciduous forests, riparian woodlands, swamps, and wood thickets where they hunt small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. They build sturdy nests in tall trees. Like other similar species, the Red-Shouldered Hawk is diurnal, meaning they hunt during the day.
