Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) is social wading bird known for their vibrant pink feathers. This coloration comes from carotenoids in their diet. As the name implies, they have a distinctive spoon-shaped bill, which is used to sweep for small fish, crustaceans, and insects in shallow waters. They are social birds, nesting in colonies with other waterbirds. When flying the Roseate Spoonbill has it’s neck outstretched, unlike herons. Protected by law after near-extinction from plume hunting, their populations have rebounded, though habitat loss remains a concern.
