The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is North America’s largest heron. The commonly seen bird is very tall with long legs, neck, and a dagger-like bill, known for its patient hunting of fish, frogs, and small mammals in wetlands. While they are solitary when hunting, they do congregate in large nesting in colonies called rookeries. They are identified by their stately appearance, S-shaped neck in flight, and distinctive croaking call, using special “powder down” feathers for cleaning their plumage. They are efficient hunters, stalking noiselessly near the water’s edge, then stabbing down with a quick burst to catch their prey.
