The Short-Eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a medium-sized owl, about 13-17 inches long, with a 38-44 inch wingspan. This owl is known for its buffy plumage, large yellow eyes, and nearly invisible ear tufts.  The Short-Eared Owl tends to hunt at dawn or dusk  preying mainly on voles and mice. Short-eared Owls nest directly on the ground in large, open habitats like grasslands, prairies, marshes, tundra, and dunes, creating a shallow scrape lined with grasses and feathers.
