Information about the South American Bushmaster:
The South American Bushmaster is a large venomous pitviper native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of South America (including the island of Trinidad in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago). Adults grow to an average of 6.5-8 feet (2-2.5 meters), but they can reach lengths up to nearly 10 feet (3 meters) It is the largest of all vipers and the longest venomous snake in the western hemisphere, although it is not the heaviest – less than some boas and rattlesnakes. The toxin is one of the most deadly of all the New World snakes, and fatalities do occur if the victim does not receive medical attention soon after being bitten. Even though the tail and colors of the bushmaster resembles that of rattlesnakes, the sound emitted by the bushmaster is quite different. Acting like a rattlesnake, the bushmaster will shake its tail rapidly when alarmed by an intruder; however, no sound is produced from this shaking from which its species name muta is derived. Instead of having a rattle on its tail to warn incomers, the bushmaster vibrates its tail across the leaves of the forest floor, creating a stirring sound comparable to that of a “rattle.”

Artist’s notes:
The South American Bushmaster was completed on 8.7.2013. I’m starting to put together a collage of various species of venomous snakes of Central and South America – and I thought the bushmaster would be a great addition to this collection of snakes. I got a great reference photo from the talented wildlife photographer Jake Scott and went for it. The scales are interesting because they’re beaded on the top side of the snake, and become more typical towards the lower part of the body.

Information about the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle:
The Olive Ridley Sea Turtle - also called the Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle - is considered the most abundant sea turtle on the planet. These reptiles get their name from the coloring of their heart-shaped shell, which starts out gray but becomes olive green later in life. There may be more than one million in the world's oceans today. Compared to other sea turtle species adults are relatively small, weighing on average around 100 pounds (45 kg). Olive Ridleys can be seen at nesting sites on beaches all around the planet, generally in tropical and subtropical areas. When the females are getting ready to nest, its believed they use the wind and the tide to help them find the beach. Females will lay about a hundred eggs, and may nest 1-3 times a year. Olive Ridleys are mostly carnivorous, feeding on such creatures as jellyfish as well as small crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp.
