The American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is a large aquatic soaring bird from the order Pelecaniformes. The bird is known for its massive bill with a pouch, white body, and black wingtips, forming huge flocks that glide gracefully in V-formations. The pelican feeds cooperatively by scooping fish from shallow waters rather than plunge-diving. American White Pelicans breed in isolated inland areas of western North America and winter along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, California, and Mexico, relying on undisturbed islands for nesting.
