California Condors (Gymnogyps californianus) are the largest North American birds, with a wingspan of up to 9.8 feet. While considered birds of prey, they are mostly are scavengers that feed on animal carcasses. They are one of the world’s rarest birds, with their population having been reduced to just 27 individuals in the wild by 1987 before a successful conservation breeding and reintroduction program was implemented. Today they are still critically endangered and face continued threats like lead poisoning from ammunition fragments.
